Red algae Eucheuma cottonii and Eucheuma spinosum which one alternative source of antioxidant and anticancer because contains polysaccharide compound. This research aims to isolate and examine the activity of antioxidant and toxicity polysaccharide extract from red algae Eucheuma cottonii and Eucheuma spinosum . The study was carried out by isolating the polysaccharide extract using water and methanol-ethanol precipitation. Antioxidant activity of crude extract was examined using 1,1-Difenil-2-pikrilhidrazil (DPPH) method, and toxicity test was carried out using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). The research results showed that the crude extract polysaccharide for Eucheuma cottonii and Eucheuma spinosum have strong antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 72,49 ppm and 75,98 ppm. The result of BSLT assay showed that the crude extract polysaccharide has a highest toxicity with LC50 value of 165,88 ppm and 337,21 ppm there are classified as toxic. The crude extract polysaccharide Eucheuma cottonii and Eucheuma spinosum has a potential to be developed as an alternative antioxidant and anticancer agent

Factors Influencing the Intention of Recipient to Pay Back Education Loan in State Foundation

    Get PDF
This paper explores the factors that influence the intention to pay back the education loan among students in a state foundation. Education loan is the primary source for the student in order to pursue their studies. The government has introduced many forms of financial assistance such as scholarship, grants and education loan. However, the loan recipients have faced difficulties in repaying the loan, which will affect the provider and future recipients. This is because, the loan provider will not be able to sponsor future students if they are not able to collect the loan from the loan recipients. This paper identifies attitude, parental influence, media awareness and perception of loan agreement towards the intention to pay back the education loan. Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is suggested to be the underpinning theory of this study. Findings of the study can assist the state foundations on setting strategies to collect payment from the loan recipients

A research on the ability of protein fraction from chocolate algae Turbinaria decurrens in territorial of South Sulawesi to inhibit the growth of Salmonella thypi and Staphylococcus aureus has been conducted. Proteins was fractionated from the whole extract using salting out method with 0-20%, 20-40%, 40-60% and 60-80% ammonium sulphate saturation. Protein was purified by a dialysis method using a selophan membrane. The protein level was determined by a Lowry method, the highest protein concentration, 5.1 mg/mL was found in the 0-20% fraction of the\ud chocolate algae. Antibacterial activity test was performed using a layered jelly diffusion method on the MHA medium. The highest antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus was found in whole extract and the 0-20% fraction with the\ud inhibition diameter of 18.63 mm and 13.30 mm, respectively

Proteins was purified by a dialysis method using a selophan membrane. The protein level was determined by a Lowry method,\ud the highest protein concentration, 5.6 mg/mL was found in the 40-60% fraction of the red algae. Antibacterial activity test was performed using a layered jelly diffusion method on the MHA medium. Results indicated that crude extract and the protein fraction of the red algae had antibacterial effect to Salmonella thypi and Staphylococcus aureus. The highest antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus was found in the 0-20% fraction with the\ud inhibition diameter of 14.43 mm after incubated for 24 hours. These research might provide a significant results for the following research on the antibacterial action in molecular level of protein compounds from marine algae

ABSTRACT Chitinase is an extracellular enzyme which is capablfJin hydrolyzing insoluble chitin to its oligomeric and monomeric components. The enzyme produced by thermophilic bacteria was screened and isolated from Sulili hot spring in Pinrang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The gram positive spore forming rod shape bacteria was identified as Bacillus sp. HSA,3-1a through morphological and physiological analysis. The production of chitinase enzyme was conducted at various concentration of colloidal chitin at a pH of 7.0 and a temperature of 55°C. The bacteria optimally was produced the enzyme at a colloidal chitin concehtration of 0.5% after 72 h of incubation. The optimum temperature,pH and substrate concentration of chitinase were 60°C, 7.0 and 0.3%, respectively. The enzyme was stable at a pH of 7.0 and a temperature of 60 °C after 2 h of incubation. The chitinase activities was increased by addition of 1 mM MI+, Ca2+and Mn2+ions, whereas the activities were decreasedby 1mM C02+,Fe2+and Zn2ions.The molecular weight of the crude enzyme was determined using SOS-PAGEanalysis. Five protein fractions were obtained from SOS-PAGE,with MWs of 79, 71, 48, 43 and 22 kOa. Keywords: colloidal chitin, thermophilicbacteria, chitinas
